Untitled (2Kiss) Mirror by Barbara Kruger
Untitled (2Kiss) Mirror by Barbara Kruger

This limited edition mirror is released on the occasion of the exhibition Barbara Kruger: Thinking of You. I Mean Me. I Mean You. at Serpentine. It is the second edition produced on the occasion of Barbara Kruger’s exhibition in Serpentine South Gallery this year; the provocation and singular word KISS speaks directly to the viewer.
Devoted to the exploration of visual culture and image production, Barbara Kruger (b. 1945, Newark, New Jersey, USA) is known for her work with imagery and words, frequently borrowing from the languages of advertising, graphic design, and magazines. Her practice explores complex mechanisms of power, gender, class, and capital. In her work, Kruger uses direct address, a form of communication popular in advertising, to speak to viewers about contemporary modes of consumption.
Throughout the years, Barbara Kruger presented her work across various mediums and forms, spatialising her ideas according to each context. Her work has been shown in galleries and museums, as well as installed and projected onto buildings, billboards, hoardings, cars, buses, and skate parks, and printed in newspapers. The artist has also designed t-shirts, sweatshirts, tote bags, mugs and other object of everyday use.

The face of a masked Cindy Sherman appears from a tomblike bed of stones in this dark and fantastical solo edition. The horned creature is bathed in ominous blue light and seems to be staring at the viewer through gaping eyes. Around it lies an abandoned bra, contributing to the mystery of the scene. Is this a devilish omen, a vision of death or maybe something more mystical altogether? As always, the artist allows us to immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of the work and let our imagination run free.

In this solo edition, the artist embodies a woman lying still on the forest floor. Her pale face is covered in dirt and her white hair appears disheveled. She stares ahead with a lifeless expression, perhaps already dead. Which horrors has she encountered on her woodland path? What story hides behind her petrified gaze? Cindy Sherman takes our minds on a cinematic journey and sets the scene for us to write our own ending.

A distressed schoolgirl takes center stage of this open edition triptych. She is crouched on a tiled floor with wet hair and an anxious expression. Her eyes are peeled to the side with alertness, as if looking out for a hidden threat. There’s an urgency in the air - perhaps this is a scene of escape. Cindy Sherman transformed herself into a picture of youthful determination in the face of imminent danger.
