Cindy Sherman is known for photographic portraits that feature her performing as numerous fictitious characters to evoke cultural stereotypes and historical characters. For this hand-held vanity mirror edition, the artist calls upon the user to complete the portrait when their reflection merges with a digitally distorted version of the artist's face. This exquisitely crafted mirror, which was made for Performa's 15th Anniversary, is an extension of Sherman's recent work on Instagram where she uses facial distortion software to transform her image. The edition references a fun-house mirror because of the distortion but the layering of the user's face on top of Sherman's does something more. The artists has previously stated, “I am trying to make other people recognize something of themselves rather than me.” ... Read More

Untitled (Vase) by Barbara KrugerRegular price $2,500.00
Untitled (Vase) by Barbara Kruger
At Kruger's celebrated Performa 17 Commission Untitled (Skate), the artist took control of the common appropriation of her work by playing the game herself. Her project included making street art and products using her signature aphorisms in bold, recognizable text. Kruger created merchandise like hoodies, t- shirts, beanies, and skateboards for a fake Supreme-style “drop” and pasted slogans as a site-specific installation at Coleman Skatepark in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Following the success of this project, the artist designed her first vase to further benefit Performa.
Untitled (Vase) is imprinted on one side with the word CULTURE and on the other the word NATURE, thus continuing Kruger's sharp critique of the structures of power and the role of culture in a Capitalist consumerist society. The vases are cast in porcelain and stamped with the artist's name on the bottom.

This triptych, featuring a detail from Untitled #414 Clown, includes three skateboard decks and comes ready to hang with simple mounting hardware and instructions. Top print features a hand-signed signature by Cindy Sherman.
Cindy Sherman's (b. 1954) ground-breaking photographs have interrogated themes around representation and identity in contemporary media for over forty years. In Untitled #414 Clown, Sherman is shown manipulating her pose, gesture, costume, and makeup to create portraits of herself as a clown. Staged with dramatic lighting and vivid color, these portraits are equally horrifying and humorous.
Our partners at The Skateroom who collaborated with artist Cindy Sherman to make this edition, donate a significant part of their profit to support social initiatives that make the world a better place. For each edition sold, part of the proceeds are donated to support Free Movement Skateboarding, an international organization that provides skateboarding lessons, creative workshops, and education for youth in Athens.

Mirror by Jean-Michel BasquiatRegular price $950.00
Mirror by Jean-Michel Basquiat
Find your swagger and coronate yourself with the Artware-exclusive mirror celebrating Basquiat's trademark crown and an excerpt of text in the artist's own handwriting taken from his prolific writings. Line your reflection up with the crown and let the text inspire you to become the best version of yourself out on the streets. The 24" diameter mirror comes ready to hang with a simple wooden mounting bracket. The text, which reads "It all depends who you are on what street," comes from one of the artist's notebooks from the 1980s which were recently published in facsimile by Princeton University Press. From the publisher, "The notebooks are filled with images and words that recur in Basquiat's paintings and other works. Iconic drawings and pictograms of crowns, teepees, and hatch-marked hearts share space with handwritten texts, including notes, observations, and poems that often touch on culture, race, class, and life in New York. Like his other work, the notebooks vividly demonstrate Basquiat’s deep interests in comic, street, and pop art, hip-hop, politics, and the ephemera of urban life. They also provide an intimate look at the working process of one of the most creative forces in contemporary American art.
