Deborah Kass OY/YO Ornament

The OY/YO Ornament is based on Deborah Kass's vibrant yellow OY/YO sculpture which seeks to evoke joy and unity in its playful monumentalizing of classic New York slang. The work uses the city's culturally specific, yet universal lingo to communicate the collective pride and exasperation of living here with the twinned words "oy" (a Yiddish exclamation of alarm or bother) and "yo" (an omnipresent New York greeting).

Originally installed for a limited time in Brooklyn Bridge Park, OY/YO became an instant New York icon for tourists and residents of all backgrounds. Handcrafted in felt by women artisans in Kyrgyzstan.
