Form plays with function to provide unique illumination in these exclusive Brussels Lamps by Jorge Pardo. Combining technological precision with thoughtful craftsmanship, and usable as free-standing fixtures or suspendible pendant lights, the lamps develop on those made by the artist for TASCHEN’s Brussels store. Their laser-cut, hand-painted PETG layers bring new dimensions to the home.

Inspired in part by Mexican baskets, these hand-crafted lamps are a determined labor of love. Each piece requires the 3D laser-cutting of 50 PETG plastic discs, shaped in ways that allow light to shine out in different directions. The discs are then painted by hand, before being stacked around the socket and bulb and held together by three steel rods and over 150 aluminum fittings. This set of five Jorge Pardo Brussels Lamps includes models #01, #05, #06, #14, and #19, each in a total edition of 100.

The Cuban-American artist Jorge Pardo is best known for his ability to transform familiar household objects into eye-catching artworks. Often combining technology with artisanal craft, his works are a perfect synthesis of form and function.

Jorge Pardo has worked with TASCHEN on many projects over the years, including the joyously colorful wall panels and lamps of the Brussels store. This latest collaboration, which draws inspiration from these earlier models, began with Pardo’s tried-and-tested creative process: he captures the notion on paper and only then starts to build the first prototype in his studio. This prototype goes through as many evolutions and reinventions as it takes to produce one that seizes his fascination.

His lamps are a serendipitous meeting of technology and creativity, often regarded as strange bedfellows: the hard-edged functionality and complexity of the one seemingly at odds with the imaginative fluidity of the other. Yet when it works, the result is something special – and these remarkable, limited-edition artworks are the perfect example.
