Paris-based Argentinian artist Julio Le Parc was a pioneer of kinetic art in the 1960s and a co-founder of the influential collective G.R.A.V. (Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel), which explored the relationship between art and technology through optical and phenomenological investigations.

At a young age, Le Parc studied under Lucio Fontana, who instilled in him the idea that color, light, and movement can alone be the materials for art-making. Soon after, the artist moved from Mendoza, Argentina to Paris, France in 1958. It was there that he became associated with a group of artists working in styles that would eventually become known as Op Art and Kinetic Art. In Paris, Le Parc became influenced by the work of artist Victor Vasarely, the writings of Piet Mondrian, and the formal traditions of Constructivism. He began making geometric abstractions based on predetermined parameters that explore the relationship between color, form, and the viewer’s perception—themes that continue in his work today.
