Bloody Rug by Wangechi Mutu

Wangechi Mutu’s carpet enters the Western canon the way her work so often does: not by asking permission, but by re-writing the terms. At first glance, the image reads like a monumental “portrait,” a category deeply coded by European traditions of power—profile, beauty, idealization, the stable subject made legible for history. But Mutu fractures that inheritance.

The face on the carpet is simultaneously present and in flux, built from blooming stains, punctures, and tendrils that feel closer to collage logic than to oil-painted certainty. The “figure” emerges through pooling reds, bruised pinks, and dark, branching forms—less a single sitter than a composite being, a body made from layers, interruptions, and metamorphosis.

This is Mutu’s direct reply to the Western archive of looking: the gaze that categorizes, consumes, and fixes. Where classical portraiture promises cohesion, she offers hybridity. Where the canon has often demanded the Black female body appear as object—exoticized, disciplined, or erased—Mutu returns it as author, as myth-maker, as an ecology.

Mutu has participated in several major solo exhibitions in institutions worldwide, currently “Wangechi Mutu” at Storm King Art Center and most recently at The Metropolitan Museum of Art “The Façade Commission: Wangechi Mutu, The NewOnes, will free Us” and at The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco Legion of Honor Museum “Wangechi Mutu: I Am Speaking, Are You listening?”.
