American photographer James Welling’s work is an integral part of the critical re-evaluation of photography exploring conceptual photographic issues. The inspiration for this rug is a sequence of photograms (a picture produced with photographic materials, such as light-sensitive paper, but without a camera) that were exhibited widely, including at the 2008 Whitney Biennial and David Zwirner.

Celebrated for pushing photography toward abstraction and for treating light, shadow, and structure as raw material, Welling brought that same experimental eye to two rugs he designed for BravinLee Editions. This one translates his bold graphic language into a room-anchoring composition: sharp black vectors cut across a pale field, punctuated by a vivid red stripe that feels like a photographic flare frozen in place.

Our partners at BravinLee Editions produce limited edition rugs by some of the most compelling contemporary artists working today. They work intimately with artists to translate their visual vocabulary and palette into rich textiles. Made of wool and silk, their rugs are hand-knotted by highly-skilled artisans in Nepal.
