This set of bone china plates depicts images from Nick Cave's iconic Soundsuits series which consists of sculptural forms based on the scale of his body.
Soundsuits wasinitially created in direct response to the LA police beating of Rodney King in 1991. The forms camouflage the body and create a second skin that conceals race, gender and class, forcing the viewer to look without judgement. They serve as a visual embodiment of social justice that represents both brutality and empowerment.
Nick Cave is an American artist and educator, but is foremost a messenger working between the visual and performing arts through a wide range of mediums including sculpture, installation, video sound and performance. Cave is well known for his Soundsuits series.
