Polly Apfelbaum is a New York-based artist whose colorful floor-based installations occupy the space between painting and sculpture. Her interest in organic forms and arbitrary systems is evident in Type. in which over a hundred different dingbats, (typographical ornaments originally used by letterpress printers to break up text or decorate a page), are arranged in a gradation based on a turn of the century palette from Dutch art supply manufacturer Talens. First claimed as pop art in a 1968 screenprint by Andy Warhol, dingbats are a recurring motif in Apfelbaum’s work.
