Robert Indiana, a self-proclaimed “American painter of signs,” created a highly original body of work that explores American identity, personal history, and the power of abstraction and language.

Robert Indiana (American, 1928-2018) was one of the major figures in American art in the second half of the 20th Century. He played a central role in the development of assemblage art, hard-edge painting, and Pop art. His work explores American identity, personal history, and the power of abstraction and language. Equally a painter, print maker, sculptor, and poet it has been hard to categorize Indiana’s work and fit him into a particular style.

Robert Indiana’s LOVE that uses the unmistakable slanted ‘O’ within a square format first, appeared in 1964 in a series of frottage drawings in graphite and colored pencil. Indiana further developed his concept through a series of paintings, sculpture and prints. Love was a subject of great spiritual significance for the artist. The image’s popularity emphasizes its great resonance with large and diverse audiences, and has become an icon of modern art.
