Devised as a system of two-dimensional shapes, one for each person on the planet at maximum population, The Shapes Project is intended to draw attention to each of us being a singularity, one of several billion human beings on Earth, and our collective failure to address emotional and practical implications thereof. The Shapes Project was initiated in 2005 and is expected to continue beyond the artist's lifetime. For conceptual continuity, each of the thirty-one billion shapes will be used only once, ensuring that every installation of The Shapes Project: Background Shapes is unique.
